Eschatology matters, because the gospel is an eschatological pronouncement. The gospel is the announcement that God’s future plans for mankind and the creation have broken into the present age. The gospel has certain amazing expectations about the future built in to it. Specifically, the gospel is an announcement of the victory of God. If we aren’t preaching a gospel of victory, we aren’t preaching a biblical gospel. To put it another way, if we are preaching a gospel of defeat and despair and futility, then we aren’t preaching a biblical gospel.
