Doomsday predictors and end-of-the-world prophets will always have an audience, because in a very real sense, worlds are always coming to an end. The Holy Spirit is always pushing humanity out of old realities and eras into new ones. He has done it from the beginning of human history, and continues to do so. We are always leaving behind old “worlds” and entering new ones.
Our lectionary readings today instruct us on the matter of how to live at the end of a world. While we are certainly tempted to be anxious and to tremble at the turbulent changes swirling around us, the scriptures exhort us to stand fast and be courageous. When the world is falling down around our heads it does not mean that God is absent or forgetful, it means that He is at work, sifting the nations, turning over the world, destroying old things and bringing new opportunities to life. This is how His kingdom advances.
